Williams had an extensive career as a manager, winning pennants in both leagues in addition to the World Series titles.

 

He gained fame as the leader of the "Impossible Dream" Boston Red Sox, who took the American League title in 1967, in his first season as manager. Williams remained with the Red Sox through most of the 1969 campaign before being fired.

 

Williams went on to manage the California Angels (1974-76), Montreal Expos (1977-81), and San Diego Padres (1982-85), whom he guided to the NL pennant in 1984.

 

The St. Louis native also spent 13 seasons in the major leagues as a player, batting .260 with 70 home runs and 331 RBI.

 

The 31-year-old was batting .214 with four RBI in 15 games this season after signing a one-year contract with St. Louis this past December.

 

In other moves, the Cardinals also designated pitcher Bryan Augenstein for assignment and optioned both first baseman Mark Hamilton and pitcher Brandon Dickson to Memphis.
